Helping Kids and Teens Engage With Sermons Using a Notebook

Kids and teens can engage deeply with God’s Word when we give them tools that fit their stage of life. A sermon notebook, adapted for age, turns passive sitting into active listening.

For Younger Kids

  • Use icons: Instead of long sentences, draw a heart for “God’s love,” a light bulb for “new idea,” and a shoe for “something to do.”
  • Pick one word: Ask them to write or trace one key word from the sermon.
  • Picture the story: Leave a box where they can sketch the main scene.
  • One action: Help them write a single next step: “Say thank you to God at bedtime.”

For Preteens and Teens

  • Give them ownership: Let them choose colors and create a shorthand.
  • Main Theme challenge: Ask them to summarize the sermon in ten words.
  • Question box: Encourage honest questions and collect them for family discussion.
  • Application contract: One small commitment signed at the bottom.

Lunch Table Conversations

Use the notebook to guide simple questions:

  • What was the Main Theme?
  • Which Key Point stood out and why?
  • What is one Application we can try as a family this week?
  • Can we pray the My Prayer for Today together?

Support for Neurodiverse Learners

  • Prep the environment: Offer a quiet fidget, noise-dampening earplugs, and a predictable seating spot.
  • Chunk time: Set mini-goals: listen for 5 minutes, then draw for 2.
  • Visual cues: Use color boxes for Scripture, Points, and Application.
  • Choice of response: Writing, sketching, or stickers all count as engagement.

Celebrate Effort, Not Perfection

Praise attention and participation. Stickers for bringing the notebook, not for perfect spelling. Over time, kids see church as a place where they are invited to notice, wonder, and respond to God.

A family that captures and revisits the Word together forms a shared memory of God’s faithfulness. A simple notebook can help you build that memory one Sunday at a time.
